Selkie Theatre
is dedicated
to discovering
the new,
the original,
the provocative,
and the powerful
in American and
world theatre -
and bringing it
home to you.
Selkie Theatre produces provocative, topical, and contemporary American and international plays; neglected classics; and site-specific and collaborative works that speak to the way we live now. The non-profit company is deeply committed to the development of new plays and playwrights.
Founded in 2005 by George B Miller & Kate Scuffle, Selkie Theatre is a dual-citizenship theatre company, producing in both Ireland and the US. In the US, Selkie’s home is in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley.
Background:
Selkie works and creates in both Ireland and the USA. During an extended stay in Galway, Selkie quickly established itself as a must-see company, producing new Irish plays and playwrights, teaching, and creating exciting community outreach programs from 2006-2009. Selkie's Galway debut was Liam Heffrons powerful, controversial play THE TINKERS BLADE at An Taibhdhearc.
Other Irish productions include: Pulitzer Prize-winner Paula Vogels DESDEMONA...A PLAY ABOUT A HANDKERCHIEF, part of Selkie's WomensWorks Project, and the George Miller-directed concert reading of MAIDEN VOYAGES, a new play by Honour Molloy and Bronagh Murphy, at Liberty Hall in Dublin
Other Galway successes include the critically-acclaimed MARK TWAIN - ON TOUR! and Pat Collins new drama GOODWILL at both the Bank of Ireland Theatre, NUIG and the Galway Theatre Festival; Angela Ryans new play TIL KINGDOM COME, produced in conjunction with Age Action Ireland and Positive Ageing Week, and Kerric Harveys candle-lit A BROKEN MOON AT MIDNIGHT,
created for, and performed on site at, the historic St. Nicholas Collegiate Church. Artistic Director Miller is proud to have directed Jasango Theatre's hit production of Joanna Murray-Smtih's BOMBSHELLS, which toured throughout Ireland and traveled to Bethlehem for the 2010 Celtic Classic.
American productions include the World Premiere of Peter Fallon's adaptation of Patrick Kavanagh's classic TARRY FLYNN at the Ice House, the community history piece THE LAST CAST AT BETHLEHEM STEEL at Lehigh, and the co-production with Funkopolis of PRESSING THE FLESH for the Philly Fringe Festival. In March 2010, Selkie produced a sold-out concert-reading of Howard Zinn's VOICES OF A PEOPLES HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES.
Most recently, Selkie has created the popular Selkie Seisiuns, a monthly new play development workshop at Arts Lehigh, and the Selkie Strawboys, an Irish mumming troupe, have entertained at Celtic Classic and other area festivals and celebrations. Selkie offers a wide range of Theatre Workshops for community groups, service organizations, and schools.
Seisiúns (sessions) n: informal gatherings of Irish traditional musicians, happening mostly in pubs. These are wonderful, spontaneous and creative events.
So what are the Selkie Seisiúns? A gathering where writers get to hear their new work in a supportive environment; where actors try on parts that they might never play otherwise; & where directors, designers, film makers and artists of all kinds get to meet and to dream.
So bring your half-finished plays and new scripts, your dreaming ideas, and your talents to Arts Lehigh!
Who knows what could happen?
The summer Selkie Sessions are open to all, and take place on the
3rd Tuesday of the month (June 21, July 19 & August 16) at 7pm
at the Arts Lehigh house at 230 W. Packer Ave on the Lehigh University Campus in Bethlehem. Email us or call at 610-351-3526 for more info.
